Freshwater occupies the western end of the Isle of Wight and sits beneath Tennyson Down, a chalk ridge walk with views across the English Channel and back towards the Solent. Alfred Lord Tennyson lived at Farringford House here for over forty years. The village is functional rather than picturesque but is surrounded by some of the island's best walking and cycling country, including easy access to Alum Bay and the Needles. Norton Green is a small rural settlement nearby. Freshwater Bay, at the foot of the down, has a small beach and a surf break active in winter.
